മഹാകവി കുമാരനാശാൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന എൻ. കുമാരൻ (1873–1924) മഹാകവി പട്ടം സമ്മാനിച്ചത് മദിരാശി സർവ്വകലാശാലയാണ്, 1922–ൽ. വിദ്വാൻ, ഗുരു എന്നൊക്കെ അർത്ഥം വരുന്ന ആശാൻ എന്ന സ്ഥാനപ്പേര് സമൂഹം നൽകിയതാണ്. അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു തത്വചിന്തകനും സാമൂഹ്യപരിഷ്കർത്താവും എന്നതിനൊപ്പം ശ്രീ നാരായണ ഗുരുവിന്റെ ശിഷ്യനുമായിരുന്നു. മഹാകാവ്യമെഴുതാതെ മഹാകവിയായ ഉന്നതനായ കവിയുമായിരുന്നു.
ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആദ്യ ദശകങ്ങളിൽ മലയാള കവിതയിൽ ഭാവാത്മകതയ്ക്ക് ഊന്നൽ കൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് അതിഭൗതികതയിൽ ഭ്രമിച്ച് മയങ്ങി കിടന്ന കവിതയെ ഗുണകരമായ നവോത്ഥാനത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചയാളാണ് കുമാരനാശാൻ. ധാർമികതയോടും ആത്മീയതയോടുമുള്ള തീവ്രമായ പ്രതിബദ്ധത ആശാൻ കവിതകളിൽ അങ്ങോളമിങ്ങോളം കാണാവുന്നതാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മിക്ക കൃതികളും നീണ്ട കഥാകഥനത്തിനു പകരം വ്യക്തി ജീവിതത്തിലെ നിർണ്ണായക മുഹൂർത്തങ്ങളെ അടർത്തിയെടുത്ത് അസാമാന്യമായ കാവ്യ സാന്ദ്രതയോടും ഭാവതീവ്രതയോടും കൂടി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രീതിയാണ് അവലംബിച്ചത്.
